”
data-original-title=”” title=””>Lorenzo De Finti formed his quartet in 2016, with Backlash of Uncertainty marking the ensemble’s fourth studio release. The group features De Finti on piano,

”

The album opens with the title track, an eight-minute piece that immediately establishes a reflective tone through expansive melodic arcs threaded with rhythmic urgency. Mandarini’s trumpet adds poignant punctuation, working in close dialogue with De Finti’s expressive piano lines, while the rhythm section steadily layers tension. Castiglioni’s assertive backbeats and the soloists’ rising thematic explorations shape a dynamic ebb and flow, as the ensemble shifts emotional gears through carefully calibrated harmonic changes.
“Nine Bridges in Königsberg” follows, its title referencing the famed mathematical problem and mirrored in the composition’s intricate structural logic. The quartet displays impressive cohesion here, with Castiglioni providing a flexible rhythmic foundation that supports nuanced exchanges between piano and trumpet. Cerebral design meets emotional weight, anchored by an engaging primary theme that is continually reshaped as the piece unfolds.
On “Temporary Shunt,” Mandarini opens with warm, slightly mournful lines that soon accelerate with an added surge of momentum. Subtle rock inflections enter the jazz framework, giving the track a muscular edge without sacrificing lyricism. The groove is insistent, highlighting the trumpeter’s rounded tone as it plays off the rhythmic drive beneath. Electronic background effects, created using Acustica Audio and SoundDrops tools, add an understated textural layer rather than dominating the acoustic interplay.
The album closes with “Occam’s Razor,” the longest track at just under twelve minutes. It begins with a luminous, unadorned piano melody that gradually dissolves into near stillness before resurfacing as a medium-tempo jazz-rock pulse, propelled by Mandarini’s soaring phrases. A brief atmospheric interlude offers a momentary release before De Finti reasserts momentum through cascading chords and agile single-note lines. The quartet increases intensity, then deftly pares it back, guiding the music toward a measured conclusion.
Backlash of Uncertainty embraces the contradictions suggested by its title, transforming fragility and doubt into engines of creative momentum. Its suite-like cohesion, melodic clarity and dynamic contrasts underscore the Lorenzo De Finti Quartet’s continued artistic growth and affirm its place as a persuasive voice within modern-day jazz frameworks.
